WASHINGTON — The Redskins are preparing as if cornerback Chris Culliver will play on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
But that is more a hope than a guarantee at this point. Culliver missed his second day of practice with an inflamed left knee and he was limited on Wednesday.
Given the expected rainy, muddy conditions at FedEx Field this weekend, there are plenty of reasons to be cautious with Culliver. Washington’s cornerback depth is thin with DeAngelo Hall out with a right big toe injury. Culliver is listed as “questionable” – meaning it’s 50-50 he’ll take the field.
Quinton Dunbar was recalled from the practice squad this week. He is a raw prospect, though – rangy and tall with long arms, but no game experience at corner since high school. Even if Culliver can play Washington may promote Deshazor Everett from the practice squad to serve as an emergency fifth corner.
Will Blackmon was signed just on Sept. 15 and is primarily a slot corner. The best-case scenario for Washington is Culliver finds a way to gut his way through this game and isn’t hampered by the field conditions.
“[Blackmon has] already played corner. He’s actually played a little safety, too,” coach Jay Gruden said. “He’s only been here about 12 days. He’s done an excellent job, but football players are football players and he’s definitely a football player that can adjust to just about anything and plays with a high, high IQ.”
Meanwhile, wide receiver DeSean Jackson (left hamstring) is out. He was doing light jogging last week, but wasn’t seen on the practice field at all this week.
“As far as your progression from slowly starting to jog to picking up your speed to full sprint, that can take two weeks, three weeks, eight weeks,” Gruden said.
In other words, they won’t push it. Inside linebacker Perry Riley (left calf) is also out. The Redskins insured themselves at that spot with the addition of Mason Foster this week – a player cut by Chicago at the end of training camp, but who has 57 career appearances over four NFL seasons. He would join Keenan Robinson, Will Compton and Terrance Plummer.
Every NFL teams deals with injuries. But the Redskins’ roster isn’t deep enough after multiple failed draft classes to compensate. And they have already lost nine players for the season since Aug.13 with at least four them guaranteed starters.
“I was looking at our IR list and our inactive list,” Washington coach Jay Gruden said. “That’s a pretty good team.”
Kedric Golston (hand) and guard/center Josh LeRibeus (calf) are also questionable. LeRibeus’ status means either Spencer Long or rookie Arie Kouandjio would take over for Shawn Lauvao – another player lost for the season with torn ankle ligaments.
