Harvey and Syndergaard available to pitch Game

LOS ANGELES — All volunteers will be considered.

As Mets manager Terry Collins surveys the scene for Thursday’s Game 5 of the NLDS against the Dodgers, two big names have been added to the list of potential relievers: Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard.

After earlier this week discounting the idea Harvey could be used in relief, Collins said he changed his mind after discussing the situation with the right-hander on the team charter to L.A.

“We’re going to be smart about it,” Collins said. “We’re not going to be foolish and go right to Matt Harvey if Jake [deGrom] is in trouble in the second inning. I think we’ve got to be wise enough to know this is the first time he’s ever done something like this, too.”

Harvey lasted just five innings in Game 3 on Monday and surrendered three runs over 97 pitches. Collins indicated earlier in the week that Harvey, in his first season following Tommy John surgery, would be available for multiple starts should the Mets reach the NLCS against the Cubs.

“He wants to pitch,” Collins said. “He never, I don’t think he ever shied away from the fact he wanted to pitch in the postseason. We’re here now and he’s ready to take the ball when he needs it.”

Syndergaard, who hasn’t pitched since Game 2 on Saturday, would also be new to a relief role. The fact the rookie is on full rest might make him a more palatable option than Harvey should the Mets need the extra arm.

“We’re talking about guys going only one or two innings tops, anyway,” Collins said. “We’re in the National League — the pitcher has got to hit, so you’re not looking at somebody going three or four innings like you would maybe in the American League.”

Justin Turner’s left knee soreness is a concern to the Dodgers, but manager Don Mattingly expects his starting third baseman to play. Yasmani Grandal is more a “50-50” proposition according to Mattingly, and the Dodgers haven’t ruled out the possibility of replacing the catcher on the roster. Grandal has left shoulder soreness.
