Randy Orton's Injury Is Major Setback for Fading WWE Star

Fans of Randy Orton will have surely grimaced when they saw the following appear on WWE's website earlier this week:

Orion is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines, and now, judging by the initial prognosis of four-to-six months, he faces a race to be fit for WrestleMania 32.

This is yet another blow for Orton, whose stock has fallen a fair bit of late. A year or so ago, he was in and around the WWE World Heavyweight Championship scene, but it's now completely unclear where he fits into WWE's long- and short-term plans.

At the age of 35, Orton's career at the top of the company is far from over. But there are a number of emerging stars who will be even further established by the time Orton returns from injury, which makes this a major blow for The Viper.

Looking at the current world title scene alone gives cause for concern for Orton and his hopes of another major title reign. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns could go on for the next few months, cementing both as the big, big names of the company in the months and years to come.

But you only have to look at what's just beneath those guys to see how tough it will be for Orton to work his way back up the card.

There's Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt and even young rookies like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Finn Balor, who will surely grow and grow as their time on the main roster increases. Throw in the fact that Daniel Bryan will hopefully be back to full fitness by then, and where does Orton squeeze himself in?

When you look back at the kind of rivalries Orton was working in before this injury, it also makes the setback even huger for The Viper. His work with Sheamus was far from sensational and never really hit the ground running at all.

Had they both produced something impressive, it could have been the catalyst for Orton to work his way back to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship scene, given how Sheamus will cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase at some point.

But sadly, it was a bit of a flop. Then he was hopelessly used as a sidekick to Reigns for his rivalry with Bray Wyatt and The Wyatt Family, further underlining just how much Orton's stock has fallen.

It might be an exaggeration to say his babyface turn simply didn't work, but when he does return to action, Orton's best path back up the card might be to return as a heel.

This is a colossal setback for Orton and his hopes of reaching the main event scene once again. His prospects of finding a killer storyline as the end of the year approached looked bleak anyway.

With this injury, WWE will have moved on a lot by the time he's back fit. WrestleMania could gone by then, and the company will have a very different feel to it.

Where Orton fits in after that period is a real challenge for both Creative and himself.
