Michelle Payne tells chauvinists to ‘get stuffed’ after becoming the first ever female to win the Melbourne Cup

Michelle Payne made history today by becoming the first female to win the Melbourne Cup – and celebrated by telling those who doubted her for being a woman to ‘get stuffed’.

The 30-year-old overcame the doubters – as well as odds of 100-1 – to become the first woman to win the Cup in its 155-year history when she guided horse Prince of Penzance to victory.

Payne was just the fourth female to ever ride in the Cup and, coincidentally, she won wearing the colours of the suffragettes: purple, white and green.

And the Australian used her post-match interview to call out those who have tried to prevent her reaching the record-breaking moment because of the fact that she’s a woman.

‘It’s such a chauvinistic sport, a lot of the owners wanted to kick me off,’ revealed Payne.

‘Everyone else can get stuffed [who] think women aren’t good enough.

‘I would like to say that, you know, it’s a very male-dominated sport and people think we are not strong enough and all of the rest of if…you know what? It’s not all about strength.

‘There is so much more involved, getting the horse into a rhythm, getting the horse to try for you, it’s being patient and I’m so glad to win the Melbourne Cup and hopefully it will help female jockeys from now on to get more of a go.’
